Position Summary

We seek an enthusiastic summer intern with an interest in applying statistical modeling to solve challenges in cellular therapies for cancer, autoimmune disease, and beyond.

Our research group in Informatics & Predictive Sciences is leveraging BMS’s broad clinical experience in CAR T to inform our next wave of cell therapy design, manufacture, and patient selection strategy, in collaboration with our partners in the clinical, translational research, translational medicine, and manufacturing organizations.

The goal of our summer internship project is to build upon modeling efforts by implementing additional feature selection techniques in tree-based models and creating visualization tools to identify issues and trends, with an emphasis on temporal biological and clinical data. If time permits, the intern will also assist in implementing ensemble machine learning algorithms to enhance the robustness of our current pipeline.

As a summer intern in our group, you will have the opportunity hone skills in statistical learning methodologies, learn the challenges of working with actual patient data, and build your knowledge of cell therapies, which are a rapidly expanding drug modality with a demand for computational scientists in the field. As a member of our team, you will also receive mentorship from industry scientists with deep expertise and connect with computational scientists with diverse background and skills.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement robust feature selection capabilities in existing statistical models.
• Assist in the development and implementation of data visualization tools to verify data quality and fascilitate interpretation of temporal data trends.
• Pilot the implementation of new ensemble learning algorithms to identify opportunities for further development.
• Communicate progress and results in internal scientific forums.
• Document code, data using version-control tools (e.g., GitHub) to ensure reproducibility of research.

Qualifications & Experience

Required skills:

• In a BS (junior/senior), MS, or PhD program in statistics, biostatistics, computational biology, machine learning, or related discipline.
• Strong statistical background, especially in non-parametric modeling and longitudinal analysis.
• Knowledge of programming languages for machine learning in R and/or python.
• Prior experience in the use of statistical learning methods such as tree-based models, regularization methods, and clustering methods.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a broader computational team.
• Fluent verbal and written English language skills.

Preferred skills:

• Knowledge of time-series methodologies, such as exponential smoothing and autoregressive models.
• Understanding of ensemble methods, such as bagging, boosting, and stacking.
• Prior experience with artificial neural network architectures.
• Prior experience working with clinical data.
